Habitats of the World: A Field Guide for Birders, Naturalists, and Ecologists Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from RJ Baltierra -- A Must for All Naturalists : I never write reviews but this book deserves it. I follow some of the authors on various forms of social media because they are tour guides for a nature/birding tour company, and share amazing photos from allover the world. It is also how I found out about the book and their photography prowess continues to be shown throughout the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael -- helps you target plant/animal species of interest; great for birders : This is the best book of its type in existence! (But to my knowledge it is the only one). Why should you consider it? This group of authors have devoted their lives (or are lucky to be employed for) the pursuit of finding birds for people like me, a bird-watcher (birder). They are elite bird guides and have birded everywhere. Sometimes it seems like they can magically find a bird in an environment otherwise devoid of birds or bird diversity. Birders know that any location contains birds that are common and birds that are rare. How do you decide whether to put your binoculars on a bird when there is little chance of finding something new? How do we know if we might see an unusual bird/mammal? Hmmm… ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shane Kennedy -- Brilliant Field Guide : “Do I really need another field guide?” I asked myself. Well, seems I do and this guide has filled a gap I didn’t realise I had. Having studied ecology and horticulture, guided in Africa and now birding in Australia I thought I “got” habitat, but much of that was acquired in the field, subliminal. Major studies of habitat seem to have been Euro or America-centric so to see habitats now presented in all its flavours such as Australia, Africa and Asia, places I know and love, is so refreshing and makes sense. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rob Deaker -- informative and fun : This is an amazing book: it is full with detailed information, yet fun to read because of the hundreds of photos and diagrams of high quality that illustrate the text. The book distinguishes 189 habitats. After an introductory section about what characterizes habitats, all 189 are discussed and illustrated one by one, grouped by major zoogeographic area (palearctic, nearctic, neotropical, afrotropical, indo-malayan, australasian, and antarctic). For each habitat there are three short sections: description (climate and vegetation), wildlife, and distribution. The emphasis is on birds and mammals throughout. At a mere 35 USD for the flexibound edition, this amazing fountain of information is quite a bargain in my opinion! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C. F. Howat -- Brilliant guide : This is a wonderful book that summarises the main habitats of the worls and illustrates them using lovely pictures. Key species are shown. So much information packed into this book. Recommend to all birders and naturalists ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Cliente Amazon -- Original : Muy completo análisis de hábitats mundiales. Buenas fotos, mapas y gráficas. No incluye nombres científicos de animales y, aunque está explicada la causa, es molesto recurrir continuamente a listas patrón de fauna. ( Reviewed in Spain on November 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BORDON Jacques -- livraison rapide : Livre bien écrit et très documenté. ( Reviewed in France on November 18, 2021 )
